Petey can respond to your difficult questions in up to 14 languages.
ChatGPT has made the jump to iOS as a third-party app exclusively for the Apple Watch, just a few months after its integration with Bing.
Petey - AI Assistant (opens in new tab) was created by developer Hidde van de Ploeg (listed as Modum B.V. on the App Store). It was originally called watchGPT, but due to trademark issues with the acronym "GPT," the name had to be changed. Petey functions similarly to Siri, according to a demo video posted by the developer on Twitter. You launch the app, ask it a question, and it responds in a matter of seconds using Text to Speech. Swipe down on the watch face and then tap Reply to continue an inquiry. Unlike Apple's Siri, Petey can provide fairly complex answers, such as instructions on how to catch a fish.
One of the issues with voice assistants like Siri is that their capabilities are fairly limited. To get a response from those AIs, you must ask specific questions in a specific manner. ChatGPT, on the other hand, is more versatile, capable of writing everything from business letters to Christmas stories. It's difficult to say exactly how capable Petey is, but it appears you won't have to struggle as much.
A work in progress
Petey is a work in progress, with new features being added all the time. You only have a few options right now. To begin, you can share the responses "via text, email, or social media," though the App Store listing does not specify which ones.
For easy access, the app can be set as a complication on the Apple Watch's face. Support for multiple languages is also expanding, with a total of 14 now available. Petey now supports several languages, including German, Italian, and Japanese, to name a few. Petey also comes with a tiny on-screen keyboard if you prefer to type in your questions. You're probably better off speaking.
There are several things in the works for future updates. According to what is known, van der Ploeg is working on adding a History tool to allow you to return to a previous question, making vocal inputs the default setting, and improving the app's overall performance to allow you to ask it multiple questions.
However, there are a couple of caveats. One: the app isn't free; it costs $4.99 (approximately £4, over $7 AUD, and nearly €5) on the App Store. Petey requires an Apple Watch running watchOS 9 or higher. So, if you haven't already, make sure you update your device. We should point out that the software does not collect user data, so you can rest assured that your privacy is protected.
Users who own an Android smartwatch will be out of luck. When asked about a potential Android version, van der Ploeg said there won't be one as his "skillset wouldn't allow [for] that". Just be cautious when using AI software on the watch for fitness and health purposes, as Amazfit is encouraging users to do with ChatGPT.
